What 'Jewish Character' Means in Israel
David’s question: “What does Jewish character even mean?”
Eve: “It's never been one clean thing. At the legal level it means the state's symbols and calendar — the flag, Hatikvah, Jerusalem as capital, the Hebrew calendar, Jewish holidays as official rest days, the Law of Return. At the demographic level it means a Jewish majority, roughly three-quarters of the population. At the cultural level it means Hebrew as the public language and Jewish history as the state's founding story. But those layers pull in different directions. A secular Tel Aviv lawyer and a settler in the West Bank both say "Jewish character" and mean almost opposite things — one means a liberal democracy with Jewish continuity, the other means Torah, land, and religious sovereignty. The law never defines which one it is, and that vagueness is partly the point. It lets every coalition project its own version onto the text.”
